First, apologies for the paucity of current release coverage. Thanks to a seasonal job that I very much enjoy — so no complaints there! — I have almost no time to watch, much less write about, the newest family films and episodic shows, either releasing in movie theaters or on streaming services, that may be of interest for adults, with or without children.
Rest assured, this is only a temporary situation, as I expect to be back in the saddle covering new releases Real Soon Now — though it may be the new year before I can reliably resume my usual schedule. In the meantime, I remain curious about what’s new, so I’ll endeavor to call attention to what’s new and interesting.
My usual starting point for streaming services is Disney Plus, which released very little that was new or of interest during the summer. Now that the fall season has begun, their biggest release is next week’s Vision Quest, advertised as ‘from the people who brought you WandaVision,’ which, yes, was a fresh, surprising series when it premiered five years ago.
Since then, television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have steadily diminished in quality, though I enjoyed the comic approach of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law back in 2022 and the rugged Echo in 2024. I was not as enamored of the comic Wonder-Man earlier this year, Daredevil: Born Again felt routine, though it definitely had its moments.
Back to Vision Quest, which appears to be the final Marvel series … for now. Here’s the official synopsis:
“Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.”
And the trailer:
The series debuts Wednesday, October 14. [Disney Plus]
